Habegger, David Luther

David Luther Habegger, 94, died March 30, 2020, in Elkhart, Ind., at the home of his daughter Becky. He was born June 15, 1925, to Barbara (Hirschy) and Alfred Habegger, in Busby, Mont., where his parents served as General Conference Mennonite missionaries among the Northern Cheyenne people. The Montana years were formative and lasting, in that he deeply enjoyed remembering the Busby sand hills and singing Cheyenne hymns in his final years. David attended Busby Indian School, was homeschooled for one year, and spent two years of high school in Berne, Ind. He graduated in 1946 from Bethel College, North Newton, Kan., where he met LaVeta Loganbill of Hillsboro, Kan. They married on August 18, 1946, after which David completed studies at Mennonite Biblical Seminary (BD from Bethany Biblical Seminary, 1949) in Chicago, Ill. They were commissioned by the General Conference Foreign Mission Board and joined his parents serving the Northern Cheyenne people. They returned to Chicago so David could pursue studies at Garrett Theological Seminary at Northwestern University (MA, 1953). In 1965 he completed a doctorate of religion at Claremont School of Theology in California, writing his thesis on "The Mission of the First Mennonite Church of Upland, California."
In his 42-year ministry, David pastored Bethany (now White River Cheyenne) Mennonite Church, Busby, Mont., Petter Memorial Mennonite Church, Lame Deer, Mont., Carlock Mennonite Church, Carlock, Ill., First Mennonite Church, Allentown, Pa., First Mennonite Church, Upland, Calif., Hively Avenue Mennonite Church, Elkhart, Ind., Mennonite Church of the Servant, Wichita, Kan., and First Mennonite Church, Urbana, Ill. Other employment included I-W regional coordinator for MCC, admissions counselor for Associated Mennonite Biblical Seminary, and Western District Conference staff including church planting. He actively supported the work of committees on both district conference and national levels, and attended all of the General Conference Mennonite Church (GCMC) triennial sessions from 1941 to 2001. He promoted GCMC congregations becoming dually affiliated with the Mennonite Church, was an early proponent of integration, and attended Mennonite Church USA conventions through the Pittsburgh assembly in 2011. He also participated in six Mennonite World Conference gatherings in the U.S., Canada, the Netherlands, and France. David sought to support the church as a witness for peace and reconciliation, which included organizing silent peace vigils, counseling those considering conscientious objection to military service, promoting social justice within the biblical framework of Jubilee, and advocating for the mentally ill. Concerned about making the church relevant, he encouraged developing annual faith covenants, creating small "koinoinia" groups within a congregation, and considering alternate church forms, such as the house church that led to Wichita's Church of the Servant. His faith led him to commit his family to a life of stewardship and simplicity. David bequeathed them his love of singing--at age 90 he could sing by memory more than 100 traditional hymns, gospel songs, Sunday School choruses, and contemporary religious songs.
David's interest in family history resulted in books on the Peter and Elisabeth (Lehman) Habegger family and the Hirschy families as well as 18 articles in "Mennonite Family History" journal. In 1995 he helped found the Swiss Anabaptist Genealogical Association to bring together genealogists and to digitize genealogical records of Swiss, German, French, Austrian and eastern U.S. immigrant families with Anabaptist roots. He willingly created an "Ahnentafel" or genealogical record for persons interested in knowing more about their European Anabaptist ancestors. He and LaVeta enjoyed leading several family history tours to Europe. David received the 2011 Alumni Ministry and Service Award from Associated Mennonite Biblical Seminaries (now Anabaptist Mennonite Biblical Seminary) in recognition of his contributions to the church, including congregational and conference ministry, denominational service, and seminary recruitment.
Survivors include five children, Rachel (John) Pannabecker of North Newton, Kan., Nathan Habegger of Nantes, France, Christen (Patricia) Habegger, Rebecca (Roger) Zehr, and Peter Habegger, all of Elkhart, Ind.; eleven grandchildren; and twenty great-grandchildren. He was preceded in death by his wife LaVeta, his parents, and six siblings, Marden Habegger, Jeanne Boehr, Helen Fretz, Esther Sauder, Lois Habegger and Bernard Habegger.
Memorial services will be held at Hively Avenue Mennonite Church, Elkhart, Ind., at a future date, with burial at the First Mennonite Church of Christian cemetery in Moundridge, Kan. Memorial contributions may be sent to White River Cheyenne Mennonite Church in Busby, Mont., Anabaptist Mennonite Biblical Seminary, Bethel College, Mennonite Central Committee or Mennonite Church USA.

Salome Horst Habegger, 86, of Scottsville, KY was born March 19, 1934 in Ontario, Canada. She married Edward J. Habegger on September 28, 1969 and peacefully passed away at her home on December 1, 2020.

Funeral service will be 10:00 a.m. Friday, December 4, 2020 at Oakwood Mennonite Church with Paul Hoover and Reuben Habegger officiating and burial in the Oakwood Cemetery.
Handrich, Richard L.
September 10, 1925 - February 11, 2020
Richard "Dick" L. Handrich, age 94, of Fairview, MI, passed away Tuesday, February 11, 2020 at his home.
He was a member of the Fairview Mennonite Church. His faith in Christ was the foundation of his life. He was active in high school sport especially basketball and baseball. Dick was self-employed for the most part throughout the years having farmed beef, chickens and turkeys, as well as owning and operating a saw mill and planer. He drove school bus for 20 years for Fairview Area Schools and always cared deeply for his bus kids. He worked hard but enjoyed playing as well. He enjoyed bowling, played summer softball and umpired the games after his playing years were done. He enjoyed hunting and was able to be in the woods even this past rifle season. He loved his woods; when he could no longer go and cut his own firewood he continued to spend time there directing a harvest or enjoying the quiet. His woodcrafts were a point of pride for him. From letter openers to furniture he didn't shy away from the intricate details of marble machines nor the size of a grandfather clock .. Every year he looked forward to making projects to donate to the Northern Michigan Relief Sale. His deepest love was for people. Family, friends, and those he'd just met would get a taste of his sense of humor and his genuine concern for their well-being. These past months provided more time for visits and he willing shared his memories, his faith and his hope with those who sat a spell with him.
Surviving are his wife Janet, children: Garry (Janice) Handrich of Mio, MI, Patricia (Frank) Arthur of Denver, CO, Diane (Jerry) Handrich of Guntersville, AL and Dallas (Jane) Handrich of Fairview; sister Olive Gerber of Goshen, IN; brother Harry (Sandy) Handrich of Fairview; 8 step children; 15 grandchildren and 34 great grandchildren.
Dick was preceded in death by his parents Oliver & Ada Handrich, wives Ruby and Alta "Effie", sisters: infant Lola Handrich, Luella Esch and Jean Hoover; brother Don Handrich and infant granddaughter Cinda Handrich.

Handrich, Ronald Ray
March 2, 1939 - August 12, 2020
Ronald Ray Handrich, 81, of Goshen died Wednesday, August 12, 2020 at Greencroft Healthcare.
He was born March 2, 1939 in Mio, Michigan to Harvey and Ruby (Miller) Handrich.
On December 22, 1959 he married Betty Jean Miller at the Fairview Mennonite Church, Fairview, Michigan.
She survives along with two sons, Rick (Pam) Handrich of Fairview, Michigan and Mitch Handrich of New Orleans, Louisiana; two grandchildren, Austin and Shelby; a sister, Twila (Boyd) Kaufman and a brother, Darrel Handrich, both of Fairview, Michigan.
Along with his parents he was preceded in death by sisters, Velda Neff and Carol Gerber and a brother, Vernell Handrich.
Mr. Handrich worked as a manager at the Fairview Hardware. He was an EMT with Oscoda County for 10 years and served with the Volunteer Fire Department. He enjoyed bowling and snowmobiling for many years and belonged to the Mio Radio Control Flyer Club, training a number of flyers.
Mr. Handrich did seven years of combined voluntary service with Mennonite Disaster Service and on the Hopi Reservation in Arizona.
Visitation will be Saturday, August 15, 2020 from 10 a.m. until the 12, noon, funeral service at Yoder-Culp Funeral Home. Pastor Sherm Kauffman will officiate.
Burial will be Monday, August 17, 2020 at 11 a.m. at Fairview Cemetery, Fairview, Michigan. Pastor Steve Gusler will lead the graveside service.
The family requests that social distancing and mask recommendations be followed by those in attendance.

Harnish, Martha Newcomer
January 2, 1928 - August 15, 2020
Martha N. Harnish, 92, of Brethren Village, died at home on the West Willow Family Farmstead on Saturday August 15, 2020, being cared for by her family and Hospice. Born in Rapho Township, she was the daughter of the late Martin S. and Lillian (Mumma) Newcomer. Martha's husband, Elvin T. Harnish, died in 2013 after 63 years of marriage.
A homemaker and farm wife, Martha worshiped at New Danville Mennonite Church, where she taught Sunday School and Vacation Bible School. She had been involved in the West Willow Fire Company Auxiliary, and volunteered at Brethren Village. Martha loved growing passion flowers, collecting turkeys, and doing picture puzzles.
Martha's surviving family includes her three children: J. Martin Harnish, husband of Sandi (Bontrager) of West Willow, Martha L. Harnish of Ephrata, and Mary L. Arment of Ephrata; six grandchildren: Amanda Kneisley (Jay), Daniel Harnish (Becky), Matthew Rineer, Joshua Fisher, Amy Fisher, and Andrew Arment; 7 great-grandchildren: Jeanette, Delvin, Leanne, Logan, Maggie, Izzabella and Kaylyn; and her sister, Mary Newcomer Eshleman. In addition to her parents and husband, Martha was preceded in death by her sisters, Arlene Newcomer and Anna Enck.
A Memorial Service will take place 3 PM, Wednesday, August 19, 2020 in the Tent on the South Lawn of Charles F. Snyder Funeral Home & Crematory, 3110 Lititz Pike, Lititz, PA 17543. The services will be recorded and uploaded to Martha's obituary page on SnyderFuneralHome.com by 5pm Wednesday. Private interment will take place in New Danville Mennonite Cemetery.
Harnish, Rhoda A.
July 3, 1925 - February 26, 2020
Rhoda M. Harnish, 94, of Lancaster, passed away on Wednesday, February 26, 2020 at Landis Homes. She was born in her home in West Hempfield Township and lived there her entire life. She was the daughter of the late John H. and Bertha Stoner Kreider Harnish.
Rhoda was a bookkeeper at Herr Fruit Farms and also worked at the former Arcade Market and was a 1942 graduate of the former East Hempfield High School. She was a member of Chestnut Hill Mennonite Church, Columbia and its sewing circle. Rhoda was also a member of the Mennonite Historical Society and her family did geneology.
Surviving are her cousins. She was preceded in death by one brother: John Norman Harnish and one sister: Kathryn Eleanor Harnish.
The family would like to give a special thank you to Landis Homes and Hospice and Community Care for the kindness and care shown to her.
A Private Graveside Service and Burial will be at East Petersburg Mennonite Cemetery. There will be no public viewing.

Hartman, Cynthia Ann
June 7, 1952 - August 4, 2020
Cynthia Ann Hartman, 68, of Goshen, passed away on Tuesday, August 4, 2020 peacefully in her home. Cindie was born on June 7, 1952, the daughter of the late Shyrl Wardlow and Patricia (Grimes) Collums. She is also preceded in death by a brother and seven sisters.
She is survived by her husband of three years, Max Hartman of Goshen; her three daughters with her late husband Jack Shumaker, Jennifer Yeo, Jacinda (Justin) Cunningham, and Sunny (Chris) Jergens; thirteen grandchildren, Clay (Marissa) Yeo, Masen Yeo, Cynthia Yeo, Mary Yeo, Suzie (Marcel) Modoux, Jacob Cunningham, Colin Cunningham, Grayson Cunningham, Joseph Jergens, Archibald Jergens, and Kinsella Jergens. She is also survived by her sister, Marika (Tim) Kunder and brother Dub (Wanda) Collums.
Cindie was a loving wife, mother and grandmother. She loved spending time with friends and family, volunteering, sewing and watching everything that her children and grandchildren were involved in. Cindie was a realtor for over 30 years. She loved helping clients buy and/or sell their homes. Cindie will be missed by all.
A Celebration of Life in honor of Cindie Hartman will be held at 10:00 am, Saturday, August 8, 2020 at Yellow Creek Mennonite Church, 64901 CR 11, Goshen. Pastor Wes Bontreger will officiate. Burial will follow at Bremen Cemetery, Bremen.
In lieu of flowers, the family prefers memorials to St. Jude Children's Hospital.
Hartzler, Michael D., 52, of Rittman, OH died June 28, 2020 at Wadsworth, OH. He was born December 10, 1967 at Orrville, Wayne Co., OH to Glenn and Elsie Maiwurm (Mumaw) Hartzler. On March 28, 1992 at Smithville, Wayne Co., OH he was married to Sharon Stutzman, who survives.
Surviving are children, Lydia (Riley) Hall, Abram (Rachel) Hartzler, and Magdalena Hartzler; her mother, Elsie Hartzler; and siblings, Dwight (Beverly) Hartzler, Jennifer Hartzler, Bruce (Lynette) Hartzler, and Tim (Carla) Hartzler.
A daughter, Caroline Rebekah Hartzler; and his father, Glenn Hartzler, preceded him in death.
Memorial services were held July 1, 2020 at Martins Mennonite Church Pavilion, Orrville, OH with burial in First Mennonite Church Cemetery, Wadsworth, OH.

August 18, 1926 - December 18, 2020
Hartzler, Naomi M., 94, passed away peacefully on Dec. 18, 2020. She was born Aug. 18, 1926 in Allensville. She was preceded in death by her father Jesse B. Hartzler, and mother Sadie M. (Cutman) Hartzler. She was also preceded in death by her sister, Elizabeth E. King on March 17, 2007.
Naomi is survived by her sister Lena R. Cashman of Duncansville; four nieces, Vera D. Hanson & husband Carl of Harrisonburg, VA; Vernane Stutzman & husband Dick of Hermitage, TN; Linda Reigh & husband Rich of Duncansville, PA; and Ruth E. Metzler & husband James of McVeytown, PA, and two nephews, Sanford King & wife Mildred of Belleville and Richard Cashman & wife Susie of Three Springs, PA. Naomi really appreciated her nieces and nephews, their spouses and families. She appreciated the friendship of her “adopted” brother and sister, Ron & Nancy Strickler.
She attended King Country School in Belleville, then finished grade school in Allensville through eighth grade. After graduating she went right to work doing private duty work for a number of homes in the area. Naomi was a nanny/hired girl for the Porter Brown family full-time and part-time from 1946-1949, which was when she earned her driver’s license. In 1948, she worked at the Welsh Mountain Home in New Holland for six weeks. Following that she went to work at the Allensville Garment Factory for 18 years. She was employed at Valley View Haven in 1968, where she remained until her retirement in 1998, at which time she was employed part-time. Since her retirement, Naomi was actively volunteering at Valley View Haven as well as with the Mifflin-Juniata Area Agency on Aging, leading the Peppy Classes for six years.
She was a member of Allensville Mennonite Church, a former member of the Hannah’s Helpers Sunday school class, a former member of the Ladies sewing circle, and she was also a Sunday school teacher in the primary department at Otelia Mennonite Church in Mount Union for a number of years. She also attended Valley View Haven Chapel. She enjoyed sending cards to encourage other people.
Her graveside service was held at 10:00 a.m. Monday, Dec. 21, 2020 at Allensville Mennonite Cemetery with Pastor Sherman Stoltzfus officiating.
Heacock, W. Lester, 91, of Doylestown, PA died May 4, 2020 at the same place. He was born January 8, 1929 at Doylestown, PA to Willis L. and Esther (Bergey) Heacock. On December 23, 1950 he was married to Sara Hallman, who was born November 6, 1930 and survives.
Surviving are children, Vern Heacock & wife, Diane of Goshen, IN, Marilyn Heacock of Marysville, OH, Daniel Heacock of Marysville, PA, and Phil Heacock & wife, Laura of Ottsville, PA; five grandchildren, and nine great-grandchildren.
Great-grandchildren, Gabriel and Colette, and three half siblings, Paul, Claude and Ruth Ritter preceded him in death.
Memorial services were held at Doylestown Mennonite Church, Doylestown, PA with burial in the adjoining cemetery.

Headings, Milton Daniel
March 22, 1963 - November 16, 2020
Milton Daniel Headings, beloved husband of Celesta Jane (Hostetler) Headings was born March 22, 1963 to Daniel and Saloma (Hostetler) Headings, at Morrison, Illinois.
He left this life at 8:15 Monday morning on November 16, 2020, at Mercy Hospital in Springfield, MO at the age of 57 years, 8 months, and 25 days.
As Milt woke with severe pain, Lestie and son Jerry soon called for help. He became unresponsive, so that Jerry applied CPR while having 911 on the line, and kept him breathing till more help came.
He was flown to Mercy Hospital where he was given a grim diagnosis. Lestie treasures the moments of conversation with Milt before they took him for surgery, which did not materialize as he died before he got there, from an aortic aneurysm.
He accepted Christ and was baptized in his youth, and was a member of the Pleasant View A.M. Church at Buffalo, MO.
On December 5, 1982 he was united in marriage to Celesta Jane Hostetler, daughter of Ben and Ruth Hostetler at the Pleasant View A.M. Church at Buffalo,MO, sharing the joys of married life for almost 38 years.
This union was blessed with 3 sons and 4 daughters, Joas and wife Julia, Halfway, MO; Eddie and wife Rose, Buffalo, MO; Alta and husband Pete Blosser, Goodson, MO; Elva and husband Stan Kropf, Collins, MO; Elida and husband Quillie Blosser, Halfway, MO; Sara and husband Troy Kropf, Buffalo, MO; and Jerry (17) of the home.
In 2018 Makalyn and husband Clayton Swartzentruber, Buffalo, MO became part of the family.
Also surviving him are 25 grandchildren, 6 sisters, Lily and husband Reuben Shrock, Buffalo, MO; Winona and husband Roy Swartzentruber, Halfway, MO; Lottie Swartzentruber, Halfway, MO; Corlene and husband Sam Hostetler, Miller, MO; Mary and husband Elton Zimmerman, Muscoda, WI; and Patty and husband Leo Swartzentruber, Vandalia, MO, 4 brothers, John and wife Jane, Buffalo, MO; Sanford and wife Betty, Berryville, AR; Donnie and wife Becky, Salem, AR; Jamie and wife Rosanna, Buffalo, MO and brother-in-law Dale Hostetler and wife Joy, Elizabeth, AR.
Also his 92 year old father-in-law Ben Hostetler, who Milt and Lestie were faithfully helping care for, Milt often stopping in on other days, too.
His many nieces, nephews, cousins, church family and friends will all miss him, too.
Preceding him in death are his parents, sister Wanda Hostetler, and 2 brothers, Steve and Davie, brother-in-law Clavin Swartzentruber, and mother-in-law Ruth Hostetler.
Although we weep, we grieve not as those who have no hope, looking forward to a glad reunion in heaven.

Headings, Paul Samuel
June 15, 1985 - May 5, 2020
Paul Samuel Headings, beloved husband of Kourtney Jane (Kempf) was born June 15, 1985, to David and Janice (Kempf) Headings at Mena, AR. He passed away on May 5, 2020 at the age of 34 years 10 months 20 days.
He was found at the base of his ladder while working alone at the gable end of a house in Cherry Hill, AR.
He accepted Christ and was baptized in his youth, and was a faithful member of Mt. Zion Amish Mennonite Church at the time of his death.
On April 6, 2007 he was united in marriage to Kourtney Jane Kempf, daughter of Frank and Emily Kempf at Mena, AR. They shared the joys and sorrows of life together for a little over 13 years. To this union was born 1 daughter Penelope Jane, age 3.
Also surviving is his Mother Janice Headings (Kempf) Sedalia MO, Sister Joanna Headings Sedalia, MO, Sister Martha and husband Dustin Kempf Smithton, MO, Brother Nathan and wife Hope Smithton, MO, Sister Beth and husband Ben Headings Otterville, MO, Brother Jesse and wife Jona Sedalia, MO, Sister Rebecca and husband Rick Knox Smithton, MO, Sister Rosa and husband Jonah Miller Otterville, MO, Grandmother Loretta Kempf (Kauffman) Smithton, MO, 41 Nieces and Nephews, 5 Uncles, and 9 Aunts, a host of Cousins and Friends. And also was loved and will be greatly missed by his parents and brothers and sisters by marriage.
Preceding him in death are his 5 Angel babies, Father David Aquila, Paternal Grandparents Ora and Mary Headings, Maternal Grandparents Alvin, Verneta, and Lucille Kempf, Uncle Emory Kempf, Uncle Phillip Headings, and 4 infant Aunts.
Paul was a very active and hardworking person. He had his share of injuries and seemed to have a high pain tolerance and was quick to be on his feet and going again. He loved to visit with people and his quick smile made him a friend to many people. He loved his family was deeply dedicated to his church family. His nightly bedtime stories and "popcorn" (cracking knee joints) ritual with Penelope can't be replaced. He loved football, volleyball, and many other sports. His love of water was unmatched. It didn't matter if it was frozen or warm. He loved wakeboarding and loved taking ski and board trips with family and friends. He loved hunting too. Many a happy hour he spent out in the woods in the fall. Usually outdoing many of his peers. He had a successful commercial roofing business and was truly passionate about it, he really enjoyed when his wife and daughter went along to look at roof prospects. Going to the national Conklin convention, spring Roofing Seminar and other Conklin events, networking with his Conklin family, was a highlight of his life. You could see the passion on his face when talking about his Roofing business.

Heath, Martha E. Hernley, 93, of Goshen, Elkhart Co., IN died June 25, 2020 at the same place from COVID-19. She was born June 9, 1927 at Scottsdale, PA to Henry and Daisy (Cutrell) Hernley. In 1959 she was married to Charles E. Heath, who died in 1982.
Surviving are children, grandchildren, great-grandchildren.
Five siblings preceded her in death.

She always seemed to know just what a dog needed, and was sought after as a dog sitter by many in her community. Her compassion for the human and canine species knew no bounds. Perhaps 'dog whisperings' occur invisibly, as her last dog, cared for by niece, Rosetta, passed approximately one week after Martha did.

Martha was born June 9, 1927 in Scottdale, Pennsylvania to Henry and Daisy Cutrell Hernley. She grew up in Scottdale, which was the home of the Mennonite Publishing House where her parents were some of the first employees. She graduated from high school in Scottdale in 1945.
She spent the majority of her career in the printing industry as a linotype operator, working for the Mennonite Publishing House in Scottdale from 1945-55, The Gospel Press in Cleveland and the Berea News in Berea Ohio from 1955-65, The Cleveland Press in Cleveland from 1965-82, and then returning to Scottdale to work for the Laurel Group Press until she retired in 1991.
In 1959 she married Charles E. (Les) Heath and lived in Cleveland, Ohio until his passing in 1982. She returned to live in her hometown of Scottdale at that time.
In 1998 she moved to Greencroft retirement community in Goshen, Indiana to join her siblings living there at this time. She volunteered extensively while at Greencroft, for a total of 3612 hours. She was a member of Waterford Mennonite Church while at Greencroft.
All her life Martha had a very special relationship with the canine family. She was a ‘dog whisperer’ extraordinaire. Martha was preceded in death by her five siblings, three nephews, her husband, and her parents. Her survivors include four nieces and four nephews, who are grateful for the practical wisdom she imparted and appreciated her dry wit and keen sense of humor; as well as several grandnieces and grandnephews, many friends, and a multitude of canine owners and their pets.
Martha passed on June 25, 2020 at age 93 of COVID-19. She will be missed greatly by all who knew her.

Heatwole, Lulu "Lou" Irene Nice
June 25, 1923 - August 31, 2020
Lulu ‘Lou’ Irene Heatwole of Penn Laird, passed away at home on Monday, Aug. 31, 2020. She was born in Denbigh, Va., the oldest child of the late Henry L. and Lulu Nice, June 25, 1923. She was 97. She married M.J. Heatwole in 1944 and he preceded her in death in 1995.
She graduated from Eastern Mennonite School and was a member of the Pike Mennonite Church. Lou was a friend to many and spent lots of time in her later years quilting and piecing quilts, many of which she gave to friends and family.
She is survived by one son, Lowell Heatwole (Sharon) of Weyers Cave; three daughters, Mollie Beery (Danny) of Mount Crawford, Edith Beery (Charles) of Mount Sidney and Betty Miller of McGaheysville; two sisters, Ruby Ziegler (Kenny) of Newport News and Bertha Schaefer (Bill) of Powhatan; two brothers, Daniel Nice (Alice) of Williamsburg and George Nice (Brenda), also of Williamsburg; brother-in-law, Glendon Blosser of Harrisonburg; and sisters-in-law, Judy Nice and Pauline Nice, both of Newport News.
She is also survived by her grandchildren, Ian Heatwole of Weyers Cave, Melvin Jake Heatwole (Emily) of Pleasant Valley, Andrea Nissley (Jonathan) of Mount Crawford, Anthony Beery (Rachel) of Cumberland, Carrie Miller (Tim) of Delaware, Quentin Beery of Roanoke, Travis Miller (Ashley) of Penn Laird, Elana Miller of Elkton, Alyssa Miller of Grottoes, India Miller of Bridgewater and Louy Miller, Tahjanae Miller, Michael Miller and Joey Miller, all of McGaheysville and 19 great-grandchildren.
She was predeceased by a son, Dale Heatwole; son-in-law, David Miller; a sister, Dorothy Blosser, and three brothers, Louis (Lois), Henry and Cecil Nice.
Because of the Covid-19 guidelines, there will only be a graveside service Wednesday, Sept. 2, 2020, at 1:00 p.m. at the Pike Mennonite Church Cemetery.

Nelson Jacob Heatwole, 91, formerly of Seneca Rocks, W.Va., passed away Wednesday, May 6, 2020, at Mountain View Nursing Home in Aroda, Va., from natural causes. Mr. Heatwole was born Sept. 24, 1928, in Rockingham County and was a son of the late Enos Emanuel and Clara Kate (Shank) Heatwole.
Mr. Heatwole was a deacon in the Southeastern Mennonite Conference. He enjoyed the outdoors and had a love for music. He had a genuine love of people and he and his late wife enjoyed entertaining and hosting friends and family in their home. He was a member of Brushy Run Mennonite Church.
On Nov. 23, 1949, he married Florence Driver Heatwole, who passed away Sept. 1, 2019.
Surviving are his children, Bertha Heatwole Horst and husband, Floyd, of Newmanstown, Pa., Kenneth Heatwole of Rockingham, Brenda Heatwole Helmuth and husband, James, of Monterey, Floyd Heatwole and wife, Denise, of Hephzibah, Ga., and Donna Heatwole Vance and husband, Michael, of Seneca Rocks, W.Va.; 22 grandchildren; 55 great-grandchildren and one great-great grandchild.
In addition to his wife and parents, Mr. Heatwole was preceded in death by his daughter-in-law, Joyce Heatwole; siblings, Ralph Heatwole, Eli Heatwole, David Heatwole, Vada Brunk, Della Heatwole, Alice Horst, Hannah Huber, Catherine Hege and Eunice Wenger; a grandson-in-law, Jason Moser; and a great-granddaughter, Amber Zimmerman.
Due to the current COVID-19 pandemic, a private graveside service will be held. A memorial service will possibly be held at a later date.

Paul Simeon Heatwole, 94, a resident of Dayton, passed away Monday, Feb. 24, 2020, at his home. Mr. Heatwole was born Dec. 12, 1925, in Dayton, Va., and was a son of the late Calvin and Mary Florence (Beery) Heatwole.
He was a farmer and a member of the Indiana-Michigan Wisler Mennonite Church.
On March 26, 1952, he married the former Orpha Ann Knicely, who passed away on July 22, 2010.
Surviving are eight children, Lowell K. Heatwole and wife, Phyllis, of New Paris, Ind., Allen E. Heatwole and wife, Patricia, of Milford, Ind., Elizabeth Ann Martin and husband, Roland, of New Paris, Ind., Judith M. Heatwole of Dayton, Va., Lera K. Rodes and husband, Robert, of Nappanee, Ind., Linda F. Martin of Goshen, Ind., Franklin L. Heatwole and wife, Kristina, of Decker, Mich., and Kevin J. Heatwole and wife, Hilda, of Decker, Mich.; 53 grandchildren and 90 great-grandchildren.
In addition to his parents and wife, Mr. Heatwole was preceded in death by a son, Steven Lynn Heatwole; son-in-law, David Martin; great-grandson, Karter Heatwole; brothers, Harold and Joseph Heatwole; and sisters, Anna Heatwole, Mary Showalter and Grace Lahman.
The funeral service will be held at Pleasant View Old Order Mennonite, Church, 3694 Coakley Town Road, Dayton, on Friday, Feb. 28, 2020, at 10 a.m. Burial will follow in the church cemetery.
The body will be taken to Mount Pleasant Mennonite Church, 967 Pike Church Road, Harrisonburg , where the family will receive friends Thursday, Feb. 27, 2020, from 1 until 4 p.m. and 6 until 8 p.m.

Ruth Marie (Kreider) Heatwole, 95, of Harrisonburg, passed away Sunday March 8, 2020, at Sentara RMH Medical Center. Mrs. Heatwole was born Dec. 10, 1924, in Wadsworth, Ohio, and was a daughter of the late Lloyd Stanley and Adelia May (Stover) Kreider.
Ruth graduated with a B.S. in Education from Goshen College. She worked as a school teacher until the birth of her children. Mrs. Heatwole and her husband were charter members of Charlottesville Mennonite Church in 1958. From 1959 until 1981, she was consummate Associate Pastor’s wife. Because their pastor lived in another city, together they did most of the pastoral hosting for their church members. She also led singing and taught Sunday school. While living in Charlottesville, she was a member of the Oratorio and University Choirs for 35 years. Most recently she had been a member of the Harrisonburg Mennonite Church.
On June 12, 1948, she married Kenneth Heatwole, who survives.
In addition to her husband, Mrs. Heatwole is survived by her children, Larry Heatwole and wife, Karen, of Harrisonburg, Don Heatwole and wife, Shirley, of Scottsville, Carolyn Nuckols and husband, Eddie, of Waynesboro and Joanne Billups of Charlottesville; seven grandchildren and numerous great-grandchildren and great-great-grandchildren. She was also preceded in death by her four siblings.
A memorial service will be held Saturday, March 14, 2020, at 11 a.m. at Harrisonburg Mennonite Church, 1552 S. High St., Harrisonburg, VA 22801 with Pastor Craig Maven officiating. The family will receive friends following the service.

Helmuth, David R.
April 7, 1935 - September 26, 2020
David R. Helmuth, 85, of Goshen, Indiana, died peacefully on Saturday, September 26, 2020 of end-stage congestive heart failure and after many years of decline from vascular dementia.
David was born in Ohio in 1935 to Alvin and Elsie (Sommers). He married Naomi Ketcham in 1956 and, together, supplied an entire team for boys basketball with the births of Robin, Roy, Roger (d. 1976), Ray and Roland.
David served the church in many capacities for over 40 years. As a youth he taught Bible school and Sunday school in mission churches in Cleveland and Congo, Ohio. Under the Mennonite Board of Missions, Naomi and he ventured to Puerto Rico from 1961 to 1973. In addition to teaching, pastoring and directing the Mennonite Bible Institute, they made life long memories and friends with a broad range of islanders and mainlanders there for various opportunities. David and Naomi covet those years and those connections.
Upon returning to the US mainland, David and Naomi settled in the Middlebury and Goshen areas. David worked for the Mennonite Board of Congregational Ministries, pastored at First Mennonite Church in Middlebury, East Goshen Mennonite Church and Faith Mennonite Church in Goshen. David also furthered his training beyond college and seminary by completing his Clinical Pastoral Education. This helped prepare him in his role as a volunteer hospital hospice chaplain. David also drove a courier route and a shuttle bus as well as serving as overseer for Iglesia Mennonita del Buen Pastor in Goshen and served on several boards of organizations affiliated with the Indiana Michigan Mennonite Conference.
As you can tell, David did not sit still very much. He relished times to be out of doors including, camping, canoeing and connecting with friends. He especially liked fishing, which he did in many favorite lakes located in northern Indiana and Southern Michigan, in addition to Ontario and the Boundary Waters in Minnesota. In his later years he rode his 3-wheel bike as often and as far as he could. This provided him renewal, energy and independence.
David is survived by Naomi, his mutually devoted and mutually faithful wife of 64 years. Also, his four sons, four daughters- in-law (Deb, Stacy, Sonja and Cindy), numerous grandchildren and great grandchildren with more on the way. His eyes lit up with glee when around the little and not so little grandchildren and great grandchildren. They loved their Grandpa and Great Grandpa Helmuth!
David is also survived by his siblings William, Barbara, James and Carol. He was preceded in death by his son Roger, his parents, brothers Paul and Dale, brother in-law Bob and grandson Nathaniel David.
The family is extremely grateful for the patient and kind care David received while at Evergreen Place, Goshen Hospital, Dr. Lane Reed and colleagues, Greencroft Healthcare and Goshen Health hospice care.
Due to Covid-19, services will be very limited and by invitation only. Social distancing, wearing of mouth and nose coverings and limited physical contact is expected to protect all persons invited. The family appreciates your understanding, cooperation and support.

Elmer Helmuth, age 86, of Nappanee, died at 6:35 pm, Friday, June 12, 2020 at his residence of natural causes. He was born July 2, 1933 in Marshall County to Henry H. and Lydia Ann (Hochstetler) Helmuth.
He was a lifetime resident of this area and a member of the Old Order Amish Church.
On October 14, 1954, he married Laura Mae Burkholder. She preceded him in death October 14, 1954. Surviving are his children, Stephen Joe (Ruth) Helmuth, Milford, Carol Rose Helmuth, Kristine Ann Helmuth, both of Nappanee; grandchildren, Jason (Becky) Helmuth, Bremen, Joel Helmuth, Amy (Steven) Borntrager, Topeka; granddaughter-in-law, Lori (Alex) Schafer, Junction City, OH; and great grandchildren, Heidi, Landon, Philip, and Lilah Helmuth, Halle, Ashton, and Cameron Borntrager. He was preceded in death by a grandson, Eric Jon Helmuth.

John J. Helmuth, age 89, of Nappanee, passed away at 3:00 a.m., Friday, November 13, 2020 at his residence after a 2 week short illness. He was born March 25, 1931 in Marshall County, IN to Henry H. and Lydia Ann (Hochstetler) Helmuth. On January 20, 1955 he married Cora Knepp in Shipshewana, IN. John was a member of the Old Order Amish Church. He was a lifetime area resident.

Marlin J. Helmuth, 68, of Shipshewana, died at 11:37 am on Monday, January 20 at his residence. He was born on September 24, 1951 in Nappanee, to Oscar and Barbara (Yoder) Helmuth. On October 14, 1975 in Middlebury, he married Katie S. Wingard; she survives.
Survivors in addition to his wife are three sons, Chris Becker of Nappanee, Leon (Regina) Helmuth of Goshen, Steve (Lori) Helmuth of Middlebury; six daughters, Wanda (Marion) Bontrager of Shipshewana, Amy (Freeman) Miller of Millersburg, Lenora (Dale) Chupp, Eva (Steve) Miller, Anita (Dennis) Schlabach, Sadie Helmuth all of Shipshewana; 30 grandchildren; two brothers, Owen Helmuth of Nappanee, Keith (Norma) Helmuth of Middlebury; six sisters, Mae Helmuth of Cleveland, OH, Freida (Willis) Borkholder of Nappanee, Clare Walters of Morenci, MI, Ruth (David) Whetstone of Nappanee, Edna (Mervin) Yoder of Shipshewana, Inez (Mike) Hochstetler of Middlebury; brother-in-law, Henry Jr. (Ruby) Yoder of Goshen.
He was preceded in death by his parents; grandson, Elijah Helmuth; sister, Emma Yoder.
Marlin worked in the factory and had a hobby welding shop at home from which he retired in March 2019. He was a member of the Old Order Amish Church.
Visitation will be after 2:00 pm on Tuesday, January 21 and all day Wednesday, January 22 at the Cletus Lehman residence, 10920 W. 300 N., Shipshewana. Funeral services will be at 9:30 am on Thursday, January 23 also at the Cletus Lehman residence. Services will be conducted by Bishop Harry Miller and the home ministers. Burial will be in Naylor Cemetery, Shipshewana.

Marvin D. Helmuth, 75, of Sullivan, Illinois passed away at 4:25 A.M. on Friday, April 24, 2020 at his residence.
Private services will be held on Monday, April 27, 2020 at the HCK Building south of Arthur, Illinois. Burial will be in the Otto Cemetery. The Edwards Funeral Home is assisting with arrangements.
Marvin was born on November 20, 1944, in Moultrie County at the home place, where he passed away. He was a son of David and Lena (Bontrager) Helmuth. He married Sarah Ann Otto on August 29, 1968 in Douglas County. They were married for 51 years, 7 months and 24 days.
He is survived by his wife, Sarah Helmuth of Sullivan, IL, four daughters, Treva Irene and her husband Mervin Hostetler of Sullivan, IL, LeAnna Kay and her husband Nelson Hostetler of Etna Green, IN, Dorothy Marie and her husband Merlin Yoder of Sullivan, IL and Mary Lou at home in Sullivan, IL, 16 grandchildren, five great-grandchildren, one brother, Adlai Helmuth, one sister, Elmina Herschberger and one sister-in-law, Irma Helmuth.
He was preceded in death by his parents, grandson Duane Allen Hostetler, two brothers, Albert Helmuth and his wife Mary, and Omer Helmuth, one sister, Katie Helmuth, one sister-in-law, Edna Helmuth and one brother-in-law, Jacob Herschberger.

Mark G. Herr, 78, of Mechanicsburg, died unexpectedly at home on Sunday, October 25, 2020. Born in Lancaster, he was the son of the late Elam and Susan Brumbach Herr. A truck driver and farm laborer most of his life, Mark also worked in his earlier years at Harrisburg State Hospital.
Surviving are two brothers; Mahlon husband of Esther Mae Good Herr, Ephrata, John husband of Marian Fox Herr, Lititz, a sister-in-law, Viola Martin Herr, Newmanstown, five nephews, and nine nieces. He was preceded by two brothers; James and Marlin Herr, and a nephew.
Relatives and friends are respectfully invited to attend Mark's funeral service on Saturday, October 31, 2020 at Myerstown Mennonite Church, 624 North College Street, Myerstown at 10:30 AM. Dennis L. Herschberger, 31, Kokomo, Indiana passed away at 7:23 pm on Thursday, February 27, 2020. He was born May 17, 1988, in Miami County, to Lloyd A and Darlene A (Miller) Herschberger. On September 4, 2009, he married Susie Mae Herschberger, and she survives.
He was a member of the Bethany Fellowship Church and worked as a foreman for a pallet shop.
In addition to his wife Susie Mae, Dennis is survived by his parents; children, Esther Darlene, Steven Dennis, Keturah Kay, and David Michael; siblings, Eldon Herschberger, Mervin Herschberger, and Lovina (Quentin) Miller, Montezuma, GA; father and mother-in-law, Jerry and Mattie Marie Herschberger; and grandmother, Viola Miller.
Dennis was preceded in death by his grandparents, Alvin S. Miller, and Andy and Rosa Herschberger.

HOWARD COUNTY, Ind. (WTHR) - Authorities have identified a Miami County who died in a single-vehicle accident Thursday night.
According to the Howard County Sheriff's Office, Dennis Hershberger, 31, was driving north on Howard County 700 East when he left the road and struck a tree north of CR 400 N around 7 p.m.
Hershberger is from rural Miami County, according to an accident report from HCSO.
The Howard County Coroner's Office will also investigate to determine what may have caused Hershberger to leave the road.

Levi C. Herschberger, 90 years, 4 months, 28 days of Arthur, Illinois passed away at 6:50 A.M. on Tuesday, September 15, 2020 at the Arthur Home.
Funeral services will be held at 9:00 A.M. on Friday, September 18, 2020 at the HCK West Building, one mile south of Arthur, IL. Bishop Ervin Dean Schrock will officiate. Burial will be in the Otto Cemetery in rural Arthur, IL. Visitation will be held any time after 1:00 P.M. on Wednesday, September 16, 2020 and all day on Thursday, September 17, 2020 at the HCK West Building. Levi was born on April 18, 1930 in Arthur, IL. He was a son of Christen E. and Amelia J. (Bontrager) Herschberger. He married Edna E. Schrock on January 4, 1951. She passed away on July 1, 2017.

Mary Herschberger, 94 of Arthur, Illinois passed away peacefully at 1:50 A.M. on Tuesday, October 20, 2020 at her residence surrounded by family and caregiver.
Private funeral services will be held on Saturday, November 7, 2020 at the Arthur Mennonite Church. Rev. Glen Rhodes will officiate. Burial will be in the Arthur Cemetery. A public viewing will be held from 4:00 P.M. to 7:00 P.M. on Friday, November 6, 2020 at the Edwards Funeral Home, 221 East Main in Arcola, IL. Mary was born on March 17, 1926 in Arthur, Illinois (Moultrie County). She is a daughter of Samuel N. and Fannie (Herschberger) Beachy. She married Henry D. Herschberger on December 21, 1944 in Arthur, Illinois.
She is survived by her husband of 75 years and 10 months, Henry Herschberger of Arthur, IL, three children, Larry and his wife Sheryll of Arthur, IL, Richard “Rich” and his wife Vicki of Arthur, IL, and Carol Kennel and her husband Rod Kennel of Arthur, IL, grandchildren Colby Tyler Herschberger of Arthur, IL, Clayton Ross Herschberger of Arthur, IL, Elizabeth Renee Smith and her husband Zachariah of California, Geneva Marie Johnson and her husband Damon of Ohio, Heather Dawn Massie and her husband Dr. James Massie of Nashville, TN., Meagan Brooke Walsh and her husband Brett of Shorewood, IL, Landon Kennel and his wife Gracie of Denver, CO, and great- grandchildren Wyatt Jeffrey Herschberger, Owen Henry Herschberger, River Smith, Gibson Johnson, Marshall Johnson, Matthew Daniel Massie, Meredith Caroline Massie, Howard Willem Walsh, Alana Kelsey Walsh, Benjamin Quincy Walsh, and Colin Jude Walsh. Step grandchildren Traci Stain, Brian Behrends, Dean Behrends and Laura Anderson.
She is preceded in death by her parents, two brothers, Noah Beachy, Alvin Beachy, two sisters, Lovina Yoder, Esther Herschberger and a still born sister.
Mary was a member of the Arthur Mennonite Church. In her earlier years she was active teaching Bible School and Sunday School. For 30 years she arranged floral bouquets for the church sanctuary, holiday’s and special events. During the holidays she placed greenery and candle chimneys in each church sanctuary window. Often the floral arrangements were flowers from her own garden. Her ideas brought about the Salad Supper for the Mother Daughter Banquets. She sang in the church choir and active in “The Octette” to provide special music at church and special events.
She had her private pilot’s license for the Cessna she loved to fly. At times she would complete her housework for the day and fly the Cessna over the countryside and “buzz” the men in the field before returning home. Recently she talked about “flying again”. She and Henry would fly the family on vacations in the Cessna. They traveled abroad, traveled to all 50 states- and Motor-coached across the country from Alaska to Key West.
She enjoyed landscaping, interior design, floral arranging and a professional seamstress. Her love was in the garden – shaping, pruning, trimming, and weeding her perennial beds. Not so long ago, she took daffodils from her perennial bed- dried the bulbs - carefully and meticulously cleaned the bulbs to share with grand-daughters.
She was active with Arthur’s Centennial. She served on the committee for designing and decorating the Eberhardt Village during construction. . It was very important to her that one room was set aside for the residents to pray or meditate.
For many years she helped with the MCC Relief Sale- designing the quilt sale handbook cover.
Her greatest joy came from spending time with her family – her grandchildren and her great-grandchildren. She loved to use her IPAD for years and even recently to keep in touch with her family.

Susanna E. (Yoder) (Diener) Herschberger passed away in her home at 7:15 P.M. on Saturday, March 21, 2020 at the age of 98 years and 1 day.
Susanna was born on March 20, 1922 in rural Arthur, Illinois. She was a daughter of Eli D. and Katie Ann (Mast) Yoder. She married Andrew Diener on March 28, 1940 in rural Arthur, Illinois. He passed away on October 17, 1946. She later married David Herschberger in rural Arthur, Illinois on May 10, 1960. He passed away on January 1, 1994.
She is survived by her son, Lewis Diener and his wife Treva of rural Arcola, IL; 2 stepsons, Henry Herschberger and his wife Mary of Arthur, IL and Eli Herschberger and his wife Vera of Sarasota, FL; 2 stepdaughters, Anna Mae Graber of Kalona, IA and Martha Ann Kaufman of Sarasota, FL; 8 grandchildren, Larry Diener and his wife Lorene of Arthur, IL, Rebecca Otto and her husband Marlin of Lewistown, MT, Darrell Diener and his wife Angie of Sullivan, IL, Glen Diener and his wife Amy of Humboldt, IL, Ruth Hostetler and her husband Levon of Arthur, IL, Willis Diener and his wife Jerilyn of Tuscola, IL, Carolyn Herschberger and her husband Kevin of Shipshewana, IN and Lamar Diener and his wife Chessea of Mattoon, IL 41 great-grandchildren; 17 great-great-grandchildren; 17 step grandchildren, 36 step great-grandchildren and 31 step great-great-grandchildren.

Bryce Lydell Hershberger, age 26, of Rochester, passed away at 7:40 p.m., Monday, June 29, 2020 as a result of a motorcycle accident. He was born August 25, 1993 in Elkhart, IN to Trent and Sheila (Slabaugh) Hershberger.
Bryce was a 2012 graduate of NorthWood High School. On May 29, 2013 he married Cathy Robertson in Plymouth. Bryce was employed at Kountry Wood Products. He attended Mill Creek Missionary Church. Bryce enjoyed hunting, fishing, bow-fishing, motorcycle riding, farming, and playing with his children. He enjoyed game nights with family and loved shooting guns. He loved to work; he was a very hard worker.
Surviving are his wife, Cathy Hershberger, Rochester; children, Natalie and Brayden Hershberger at home; father, Trent (Penni) Hershberger, Rochester; mother, Sheila Hershberger, Nappanee; sister, Tanya (Joe) Borkholder, Nappanee, Stacy (Joas) Yoder, North Liberty, brother, Craig Hershberger, Nappanee; paternal grandmother, Ida Mae Hershberger, Nappanee; maternal grandparents, Larry (Katie) Slabaugh, Nappanee; father-in-law, Mike Gaines, Bremen; 2 nephews and 4 nieces.

Marlene Sue Hershberger, 51, of LaGrange, died at 12:24 pm on Wednesday, January 29, at her residence. She was born on June 16, 1968 in LaGrange to Barbara Hershberger.
Surviving in addition to her mother are two aunts, Gladys Hochstedler of LaGrange, Alma (Ora) Schrock of Topeka; two uncles, Simon Hershberger of LaGrange, Owen (Verna)
Hershberger of Mora, MN and several cousins.
She was preceded in death by her aunt, Susie Huth and her uncle, Ervin Hershberger.
Visitation will be after 3:00 pm on Thursday January 30, and all day Friday January 31, at Richard Bontrager residence, 2550 W. 350 S., LaGrange. Funeral services will be at 9:30 am on Saturday February 1, at the same residence. Services will be conducted by Bishop Ervin Bontrager, Jr. and the home ministers. Burial will be in Miller Cemetery, LaGrange.

William L. Hershberger, 80, passed away Monday, September 7, 2020, at his home in rural Hutchinson, Kansas. He was born August 30, 1940, in Middlebury, IN, to Levi E. and Lydiann (Miller) Hershberger.
William was a farmer, mechanic, and an avid woodworker. He built his own sawmill and enjoyed making furniture and wooden toys for his grandchildren. William was also an Offender Victim Ministry mentor at the Hutchinson Correctional Facility. He was a member of Center Amish Mennonite Church.
On October 27, 1960, he married Mary Elizabeth Yutzy in Buchanan County, Iowa. They shared almost 60 years of marriage.
William is survived by: wife, Mary Elizabeth of rural Hutchinson; children, LeRoy Hershberger, Partridge, KS, RoseAnna Nissley (Mark), of Haven, Miriam Joy Derstine (Mark) of Sanford, NC, David Alan Hershberger (Luann) of Melvern, KS, Regina Kaye Derstine (Trevor) of Culver, OR, Michael Jon Hershberger (Jolene) of Hutchinson, KS, Paul Brian Hershberger (Cynthia), of Partridge, KS, Joseph William Hershberger (Leanna) of Nickerson, KS, and Charity Elizabeth Hershberger of Harrisburg, OR; siblings, Mervin Hershberger (Sarah) of Augusta, WI, Mary Stutzman (Perry) of Delhi, IA, and Viola Lambright of Hazelton, IA; brother-in-law, Roman Raber of Fairbank, IA; 43 grandchildren; and 21 great-grandchildren.

Jean L. Hershey, age 92, of Gap, passed away on Monday, August 31, 2020 at the Newport Meadows of Christiana. She was born in Paradise, daughter of the late Mark & Anna Hershey Hershey.
She was a member of the former Kinzer Mennonite Church. She worked at Vallorbs Jewel Company of Bird In Hand for 64 years, retiring when she was 86. She enjoyed cardinals, baseball, attending family sporting events and traveling visiting 47 states.
Surviving are 6 siblings: Ethel Bender of Bronx, NY, Lynford husband of Jeanie Kauffman Hershey of Idaho, Janet Martin of New Holland, Doris wife of Skip Lichty of Paradise, Velda wife of Warren Peachey of Florida, Robert husband of Margy Lehigh Hershey of Paradise. She was preceded in death by a brother, Kenneth husband of Betty Jane Hershey of New Holland.
Funeral service will take place from the former Kinzer Mennonite Church, 45 North Kinzer Road, Kinzers, PA on Friday, September 4th at 11 a.m. with a viewing time from 10:30 a.m. until time of service. Pastor Dwight Groff will be officiating. Interment will be in the adjoining church cemetery.
Hershey, Mabel Leaman
October 8, 1920 - May 4, 2020
Mabel Leaman Hershey, 99, went to be with the Lord on May 4, 2020. She most recently had lived in Providence Twp. with her son and his wife. In 2017, she fell and broke her hip. After she was discharged from the hospital, her home became Mt. Hope Nazarene Retirement Community, Manheim, receiving tender, loving care until the time of her death.
She was born in East Lampeter Twp. on October 8, 1920, the daughter of the late Tobias G. and Hettie Denlinger Leaman, and the wife of the late Raymond C. Hershey. She and her husband lived in Salisbury Twp. until 1966 when they moved to Montour County, where her husband was pastor at Derry Mennonite Church until his death in 1998. She continued to live in Montour County until 2011 when she moved back to Lancaster County. She is survived by one son, J. Kenneth Hershey and his wife JoAnne Campbell Hershey. She was Grandma to Regina (Patrick) Hartsfield of Phnom Penh, Cambodia, Steven (Jennifer Ulrich) Hershey, Quarryville, and Jenelle (Roy) Gerlach, Strasburg, and great-grandmother of Hannah, Seth, and Luke Hartsfield and Alison, Shaun, Michelle, Nicole, Benjamin, and Daniel Hershey. She was preceded in death by a son, J. Mervin Hershey, who died in childhood of leukemia, and one great-grandson, Joshua Wren Hershey.
She was the 8th of nine children, all of whom have preceded her in death: Ivan (Ethel) Leaman, Clayton (Esther) Leaman, Esther (Daniel) Shenk, Anna (Allen) Kreider, Mary Leaman, infant Jason, Ruth (Edward) Rutt and Tobias (Elva) Leaman.
Before moving to Montour County, Mabel worked in the cafeteria at Pequea Valley High School. After moving to Montour County, she was very involved in the church and in the community. Her neighbors in the little town of White Hall loved her frequent gifts of chocolate chip cookies and homemade candy. She was a faithful letter writer and remembered to send dozens of birthday cards each year. Mabel was a quiet, gentle woman who walked the Jesus Path. Her life had a great effect on the lives of many children who came to Derry MC for Summer Bible School each year. She most recently attended Mechanic Grove Mennonite Church near Quarryville.
A private burial service will be at Hersheys Mennonite Church, Kinzers. She will be laid to rest beside her husband, her son, and her great-grandson. A memorial service will be held at a later date.
Hertzler, Maurice Edward
May 25, 1933 - November 30, 2020
Maurice Edward Hertzler, a dedicated family farmer, passed away November 30, 2020 at his home in Turbot Township in Northumberland County, PA at the age of 87. He was a man of faith, who appreciated soil. He liked to plant trees. He cared for animals and wildlife. He knew a lot about breeding cattle and how to keep old machinery going for decades. He could weld and do carpentry, and he admired those who did it better. He worked long hours when unsuitable weather threatened or if the crop needed to be harvested before the sabbath, but he did not hesitate to take a break to talk or to help family and neighbors.
Maurice heeded the call of the prophet Micah (6:8) to do justly and love mercy and to walk humbly with God. He believed in loving his neighbors (Mark 12:31), which he understood as extending to the whole world (Luke 10:25-37). He had a fine tenor voice, and didn’t mind leading hymns in church or singing in a quartet or solo, if asked. He had a sense of adventure and enjoyed opportunities to travel and read about the world.
He is survived by his wife Rhoda (Zeager) who farmed with him. He is also survived by his children, Douglas who is married to Jodi-beth McCain (Mt. Rainier, MD), Michael who is married to Deborah Steinberg (Port Matilda), Karen who is married to Brady Crist (Lewis Township), and three grandchildren, Aleja and Elizabeth Hertzler-McCain, and Reuben Crist. His sister Janet Pobst (Atascadero, CA) survives him, while his other siblings, Elma Ebersole, Jason, Norman, Iva Mae, Esther Longenecker, Melvin, Emma Jean Zimmerman, and Verna Vann have preceded in death.
Maurice was born on May 25, 1933 in Mechanicsburg, Pennsylvania, son of Alta (Burkhart) and Owen Hertzler. He grew up with his brothers and sisters on his parents’ dairy farm and attended Slate Hill Mennonite Church. After 8 years at the nearby one-room school in Shepherdstown, PA, he attended and graduated from Messiah Academy. He continued working on his parents farm, and also sang in the Grantham Oratorio Society.
In 1957 at the age of 24, during the time the Mennonite Church maintained alternative service programs for conscientious objectors to the peace-time draft, Maurice decided to volunteer to go overseas. He had imagined he would be sent to Europe by Mennonite Central Committee to continue rebuilding after World War II, but to his surprise they asked him to go to Indonesia to work on an agricultural project.
He completed a large part of the journey by boat, setting sail from Montreal to Europe continuing through the Mediterranean, stopping to visit the pyramids in Egypt and heading through the Suez Canal to the Port of Aden. From there he sailed through the Indian Ocean to Singapore to wait for a visa for Indonesia. There he learned that his father was terminally ill with cancer, but his family encouraged him to continue his journey. He received news of his father’s death by telegram during the several weeks it took to travel on a series of boats from the Indonesian capital of Java to his placement on the distant island of Halmahera in the Moluccas. He remained in Indonesia for three and a half years and learned to speak Bahasa. He worked with an agricultural cooperative that grew coconuts and worked alongside a team of healthcare workers. On his way home he took a motorcycle trip up the coast of Vietnam in 1962 during the buildup to the war. He also stopped in Hong Kong, Tokyo, San Francisco and Disneyland before meeting his mother at his sister Esther’s house in Morton, Illinois.
He returned to Mechanicsburg, where his mother continued to run the farm, and eventually decided to join his brother Jason and his wife Margaret (Gable) in setting up a dairy farm at Strawberry Ridge in Montour County. There he attended Beaver Run Mennonite Church and met his wife Rhoda. They were married in 1965 at Warrior Run Church. Soon afterward Pennsylvania Power and Light chose the farm site for a power plant. The brothers and their wives bought the Buttonwood Spring Farm in Limestone Township in 1968, where they milked cows. Maurice served on the state and local boards of the Dairy Herd Improvement Association.
In 1976, Maurice and Rhoda bought farmland and a house just across the county line. There they raised 3 children, a few animals, and a lot of corn, soybeans, wheat, hay, green beans, and peas. He was active in the Northumberland County Farm Bureau. In 2010, they built their retirement home on the other side of the farm, and attended Community Mennonite Fellowship in Milton.
Due to the COVID-19 pandemic, a private burial service will be held at Beaver Run Mennonite Church Cemetery, with a Zoom memorial service to be announced later. Donations in his memory can be sent to Mennonite Central Committee, a world relief and service organization, 21 S 12th St, Akron, PA 17501.
Hess, W. Roy
June 17, 1937 - April 4, 2020
W. Roy Hess, 82, of Woodcrest Villa, passed away on Saturday, April 4, 2020 at the Mennonite Home. He was the husband of Brenda M. Garrett Hess with whom he would have celebrated their 59th wedding anniversary in September. He was born in Ephrata, son of the late Walter B. and Ruth Naomi Horst Hess. He was a builder and real estate developer before his retirement in 2000. Roy was a member of Manor Church and a veteran of the U.S. Army.
Surviving in addition to his wife, his children: Scott R. (Julia A.) Hess; Karen N. (Keith R.) McEllhenney; and Brett A. (Tricia D.) Hess. Three grandchildren: Greg, Alen and Dana. Brothers: Bob, John, Jim, Dick, and Earl Hess. Sisters: Ruth Ann Gochnauer and Sheryl Quickel. He was preceded in death by one brother: Clarke Hess.

David M. High, 81, of Denver, died peacefully at home on Saturday, December 12, 2020. His wife, Esther H. (Martin) High, preceded him in death on May 14, 2020.
Born in East Earl Twp., he was the son of the late Ammon Z. and Katie (Martin) High.
David was a truck driver for Messner Brothers for 30 years. He also provided transportation service for Sunrise Meadows.
He was a member of Bowmansville Mennonite Church, Weaverland Conference.
Surviving family includes four daughters, Susan High of Denver, Dorcas Martin of East Earl, Janet wife of Clinton Wenger, Unity, WI, and Miriam wife of Neil Martin of Newville; four sons, Leonard husband of Alma High of Newville, Edward husband of Edna High of East Earl, Jeremiah husband of Rosanna High of Spencer, WI and Jay David husband of Melissa High of Edgar, WI; 45 grandchildren, 13 great-grandchildren; and two siblings: Lloyd M. High, Rothsville, and Grace married to Marlin Sadler, Osage, IA.
He was preceded in death by a son, James High, a son-in-law, Curvin Martin, and four grandchildren.

High, Dorothy M. "Dart" Mellinger
October 10, 1939 - November 9, 2020
Dorothy M. "Dart" High, 81, of Lancaster, left peacefully into the waiting arms of Jesus with her family by her side on Monday, November 9, 2020. She had a valiant journey with bladder cancer for 15 years.
She was married 62 years to Donald L. High. Born in Marticville, she was the daughter of the late William G. and Mabel Witmer Mellinger.
Dorothy was a graduate of Manheim Township High School and in addition to raising her four children she worked at the Lancaster Central Market for 10 years for Widder's Produce, now Mecks. She was an active Charter Member of the Neffsville Mennonite Church and was involved in the Ambassador's For Christ Sunday School Class. In earlier years she had been involved with a chapter of the Farm Women and a circle of friends group. She and her husband spent many wonderful winters at their home in Sarasota where they golfed and played games with their Lancaster friends. She was thoroughly immersed in the lives of her grandchildren and cherished every minute she spent with them. She was recently involved with a Black Rook group and also met with a group of friends at S. Clyde Weaver's every Friday morning.
Surviving besides her husband is a daughter, Lisa H. wife of Don G. Clark, Jr. of Ronks; two sons, Marc D. High of Lancaster, and Joel E. High of Myrtle Beach, SC; seven grandchildren, Katelyn Mellinger, wife of Andy, Donald Clark III, husband of Amy, Brooke High, Owen High, Travis High, Alex High and Sarah High; and a brother, Bill husband of Elizabeth Mellinger of East Petersburg. She was preceded in death by a son, Michael E. High and by a sister, Anna Diller of Easton, PA.
Dart reached out to many who came into her life; she was a very giving person and would send many notes of encouragement to those who needed it, and was also a prayer warrior.
Services and interment in the Mellinger Mennonite Cemetery will be private and held at the convenience of the family. Esther H. High, 79, of Denver, PA passed away at home on Thursday, May 14, 2020 following a stroke.
She was the wife of David M. High and they celebrated 58 years of marriage in April. Born Sept 2, 1940 in Brecknock Twp, she was the daughter of the late Henry W. and Leah Horning Martin.
Esther was a homemaker and a member of the Bowmansville Mennonite Church, Weaverland Conference.
Surviving besides her husband are four daughters: Susan High of Denver, Dorcas Martin of East Earl, Janet wife of Clinton Wenger, Unity, WI, and Miriam wife of Neil Martin of Newville; four sons, Leonard husband of Alma High of Newville, Edward husband of Edna High of East Earl, Jeremiah husband of Rosanna High of Spencer, WI and Jay David husband of Melissa High of Edgar, WI; forty-five grandchildren, twelve great-grandchildren; two brothers, Charles husband of Laura Martin of Ephrata, and Alvin husband of Eva Martin of Rutledge, MO; a brother-in-law, Clarence Eberly of Reinholds; and three sisters-in-law, Anna Mary Martin of East Earl, Mildred Martin of Pine Grove, and Verna Martin of Edina, MO.

Nora K. High, 88, of Honey Grove, passed away at 3:22 a.m., Wednesday, November 25, 2020 at her residence.
Born on January 19, 1932, in New Holland, Lancaster County, she was a daughter of the late Clayton C. and Lizzie H. (Kurtz) Martin. On December 29, 1951, she married her late husband, John N. High, with whom she was blessed to share nearly 58 years before he preceded her in death on November 12, 2009.
She is survived by her children: David High of Pitman, John High, Jr. and his wife Doreen of Bluford, Ill., Irene Martin of Anna, Ill., Karen Nolt and her husband Leon of Honey Grove, Mark High and his wife Cheryl of Silver Lake, IN, Lorraine Moser and her husband Joni of Spring Grove; one daughter-in-law, Dawn High of Unity, Wis.; a brother, John K. Martin of Lancaster; and she leaves behind 49 grandchildren and many great grandchildren.
Preceding her in death were one son, Curvin High; one son-in-law Carl Martin; a daughter in law, Lavina W. High; five brothers and two sisters.
Mrs. High was a homemaker and a member of the Cocolamus Mennonite Church, Bunkertown.
Nora was a talented seamstress, making thousands of sun bonnets for souvenirs. She had a gift for entertaining, always enjoying being a hostess sharing her hospitality with her family and friends.
Funeral services will be held at 10:30 a.m., on Monday, November 30, 2020 from the Cocolamus Mennonite Church, Bunkertown with Pastor Gerald N. High, Pastor Joel D. Landis and Pastor Wesley E. Martin officiating. Interment will follow in the Brick Church Cemetery, Richfield.
Viewing will be held from 5-8 PM, Sunday, November 29, 2020 at the Cocolamus Mennonite Church, Bunkertown.

Dorothy Arlene (Frey) Hill, age 93, of Orrville, OH died peacefully at her home on Sunday, August 23, 2020.
She was born June 11, 1927 to Ammon and Fannie (Yoder) Frey in LaGrange County, IN.
She married Wayne L. Hill on July 31, 1947. He died in 2012.
Dorothy has two children: Sandra (Carlin) Lehman of Orrville, OH, whom she lived with for the past 16 years; and Phillip (Carol) Hill of LaGrange, IN. She has 7 grandchildren: Michael (Virginia) Lehman, Christa (Robert) Hershberger, Suzanne (Shawn) Nolt, Edward Lehman II, Jason (Sarah) Hill, Nathan (Brittany) Hill, and Nicole (Curt) Chapman. There are 28 living great grandchildren.
She was preceded in death by her husband; 2 brothers, Fred and Oscar Frey; 3 sisters, Martha Goodremont, Nora Yoder, and Alice Hummel; twin great grandsons, Benjamin and David Nolt; and 5 nieces and 5 nephews.
Dorothy was a homemaker and helped her husband on the farm. She was actively involved in her church as a Sunday School teacher and a member of the sewing circle. She enjoyed baking and sharing sugar cookies and chocolate chip bars, giving hugs, reading, cross-stitching quilt blocks,and putting puzzles together. She loved the Lord and served Him faithfully.
The family would like to thank Hospice of Wayne County and many family and friends who helped care for Dorothy these last few years. A donation may be made in her memory to Kidron Mennonite Church or Hospice of Wayne County.
The family will have a private memorial service in Ohio with a graveside service at Shore Cemetery, in Shipshewana, IN.

Elizabeth Hilty, 88, of LaGrange, died Tuesday, October 27, 2020, at 12:30 p.m. at her residence.
She was born in New Haven, IN., on August 1, 1932, she was the daughter of Levi and Sarah (Eicher) Miller.
Elizabeth was a home maker and a member of the Old Order Amish Church.
She married Joseph K. Hilty on October 20, 1955, in New Haven, IN. Joseph preceded her in death on September 5, 2004.
Surviving are her six daughters; Ruth Ann (Ervin) Hilty of Berne, IN, Rose Marie (Amos C.) Graber of Elroy, WI, Sarah Irene (Albert B.) Coblentz of LaGrange, Edna Mae (Lester) Wicker of Homer, MI, Amanda Kathryn (James) Shetler of LaGrange, and Sylvia Kay Hilty of LaGrange, a son; James (Amy) Hilty of LaGrange, 64 grandchildren and 142 great grandchildren, a brother; Andrew (Verna) Miller of New Haven, IN, and a sister-in-law, Leah Miller of Ashley, IN.
Her parents, a husband and a half-brother, Henry Miller preceded her in death.
Funeral Services will be held at 9:30 a.m. on Friday, October 30, 2020, at the James Hilty, Jr. residence, 4225 E 160 S, LaGrange.
The Bishop Nathan Miller and home ministers is officiate the services.
Burial will take place in Oak Hill Cemetery, LaGrange.

Gladys Marietta Hochstedler, 80, of LaGrange, died at 10:10 am, on Tuesday, June 30 at Life Care Center, LaGrange. She was born on November 27, 1939, in Parkman, OH, to Menno and Mary (Schmucker) Hershberger. On March 19, 1959 in LaGrange, she married John N. Hochstedler; he died April 29, 1997.
Surviving are four sons, Menno (Rhoda) Hochstedler of Topeka, Ervin (Ida Mae) Hochstedler of Bourbon, Walter Hochstedler of Colon, MI, John Ray Jr. (Marlene) Hochstedler of Arthur, IL; two daughters, Mary Gibson of New Paris, Alma (Reuben) Miller of LaGrange; 23 grandchildren, 18 great-grandchildren; two brothers, Simon Hershberger of LaGrange, Owen (Verna) Hershberger of Mora, MN; two sisters, Barbara Hershberger of LaGrange, Alma Arlene (Ora) Schrock of Topeka.

Agnes Hochstetler, 91, of Goshen, went home to be with her Lord and Savior at 5:30 am on Friday, October 23, at Greencroft Health Care Center. She was born on January 5, 1929 in Milo, ND, to Levi and Lizzy (Graber) Bontrager. On October 4, 1949 in Middlebury she married Laban Hochstetler, he survives.
Survivors in addition to her husband are four daughters, Joanna (Oren) Yoder of Partridge, KS, Judy (Willard) Martin of Goshen, Elsie (Jason) Schrock of Halsey, OR, Mary Gingerich of Plain City, OH; three sons, Edwin Hochstetler of Goshen, Nathan (Jan) Hochstetler of Sioux Lookout Ontario, Canada, John (Denise) Hochstetler of Middlebury; 29 grandchildren, 43 great-grandchildren; sister, Lucille (Paul) Schrock of Goshen; sister-in-law, Mary Bontrager of Goshen.
She was preceded in death by her parents; two sons, Wilbur Hochstetler and Mark Sweeney; two grandchildren, Jaron Martin and Andrew Yoder; three great-grandchildren; brother, Alvin Bontrager, four sisters, Gladys Gingerich, Mary Slabaugh, Lavina Bontrager and Viola Bontrager; two sons-in-law, Mark Gingerich and Lowell Mast.
Agnes was a homemaker and had been an active member of Fairhaven Mennonite Church. She was happiest when she was serving others, especially serving the handicap through Project Promise, where she volunteered for 35 years. She also volunteered grading Bible Study courses for Gospel Echoes and jointly with her husband volunteered as cooks at Camp Andrews for 11 summers. She enjoyed piecing quilts and comforters for her children and grandchildren.
Due to the national pandemic, the family will be holding private services. Burial will be in Miller Cemetery, Goshen. The community may support the family by giving memorial contributions to Project Promise and mailing them to Miller-Stewart Funeral Home, 1003 S. Main St., Middlebury.

Anna Marie Hochstetler, 80, of Topeka, died at 2:00 am on Tuesday, November 24, at Millers Merry Manor, LaGrange. She was born on May 25, 1940 in LaGrange County to Ammon and Elizabeth (Wingard) Miller. On May 26, 1966 in Topeka she married Ura Hochstetler, he survives.
Survivors in addition to her husband are a brother, Perry (Alice) Miller of Cambria, WI; sister, Elizabeth Yoder of Topeka; sister-in-law, Erma Troyer of Topeka; several nieces and nephews; caregivers, Steven and LaVera Bontrager of Topeka. She was preceded in death by her parents; sister, Wilma Troyer and brother, Freeman Miller.
Anna was a homemaker and member of the Old Order Amish Church.

Anna Mary Hochstetler, 93, Elkhart, died 4:20 p.m. Monday, May 11, 2020 at Greenleaf Health Campus. She was born Sept. 18, 1926, in Elkhart, to Ivan & Pearl (Boyer) Hochstetler.
Surviving are nieces and nephews.
Preceding her in death are her parents, a sister, Janet Miller, half-sister, Elsie Masterson and a brother, Ray Hochstetler.
Anna Mary was a 1944 graduate of Wakarusa High School and received a Bible degree at Goshen College in 1946. She worked at Elkhart General Hospital in medical billing for many years. After retiring, Anna Mary worked at the gift shop at the hospital as a volunteer. She was a member of Olive Mennonite Church.
Private family services will be held. Pastor Jason Ramer will officiate. Burial will be in Olive (East) Cemetery. Memorial donations may be directed to the Olive Mennonite Church.

He was born July 12, 1939 in Kosciusko County, IN to Monroe L. and Elva (Miller) Hochstetler. On April 6, 1974 he married Leah Zook. She preceded in death January 29, 1981. Earl was a member of the Old Order Amish Church.

Esther J. Hochstetler, age 83, of Bremen, died at 5:25 pm, Saturday, September 12, 2020 at her residence. She was born September 12, 1937 in Middlebury to Jerry and Emma (Eash) Hostetler. On September 4, 1958, she married John Henry Hochstetler in Middlebury. He preceded her in death December 29, 2011.
Mrs. Hochstetler lived her lifetime in this area. She was a homemaker and a member of the Old Order Amish Church.

John Henry Hochstetler, 80, of Middlebury, died at 1:18 am on Sunday, March 15, at Goshen Health Hospital. He was born on December 31, 1939 in Bremen to Manasses and Amelia (Borkholder) Hochstetler. On April 13, 1961 in Middlebury he married Mary Ellen Miller, she survives.
Survivors in addition to his wife are three sons, Devon (Wilma) Hochstetler of Middlebury, Lyle (Karen) Hochstetler of Nappanee, Lynn Hochstetler of Middlebury; three daughters, Norma (Keith) Helmuth of Middlebury, Velma (David) Hochstetler of Millersburg, Waneta (Richard) Miller of Topeka; 28 grandchildren, 30 great-grandchildren; two brothers, Ezra (Patricia) Hochstetler of Goshen, Wilbur (Sue) Hochstetler of Charlotte, MI; sister, Judith Kauffman of Middlebury; two sister-in-laws, Miriam Hochstetler of Nappanee and Ada Hochstetler of Holland, MI.

Mary Hochstetler, 95, of Goshen, formerly of Middlebury, died at 11:25 am on Thursday, August 6, at Courtyard of Goshen. She was born on April 18, 1925 in LaGrange County to Moses and Barbara (Hershberger) Glick. On February 6, 1947 in Lagrange County she married Joe J. Hochstetler; he died October 25, 2005.
Surviving are two sons, Maynard (Laura) Hochstetler of Middlebury, Marvin (Arlene) Hochstetler of Topeka; six daughters, Barbara Etta (Laban) Mast of Goshen, Edna Fern (Gordon) Bauman of Goshen, Irene (Daniel) Marner of Constantine, MI, Linda (Marvin) Yoder of Dade City, FL, Treva (Aaron) Bauman of Monterey, TN, Carolyn (Allen) Miller of Arthur, IL; 35 grandchildren, 71 great grandchildren, one great great granddaughter.
She was preceded in death by her parents; husband; daughter, Joanna Hochstetler; five brothers, Dan Glick, Milo Glick, John Glick, Levi Glick, Andrew Glick; three sisters, Elizabeth Miller, Rosa Glick, Anna Kramer; and a grandson.
Mary was a homemaker and enjoyed quilting and gardening. She was a member of Fairhaven Mennonite Church.

Sarah Mae Hochstetler, 76, of Shipshewana, died at 12:14 am on Monday, December 28 at Parkview LaGrange Hospital following a short illness. She was born on August 31, 1944 in LaGrange County, to Amos W. and Edna (Weaver) Hochstetler.
She is survived by her four sisters, Esther Miller, Wilma (Leroy) Hershberger, Irene (LeRoy) Miller all of Shipshewana, Erma (Richard) Bontrager of LaGrange; sister-in-law, Rosa (Lloyd) Yoder of Middlebury; 42 nieces and nephews.
She was preceded in death by her parents; brother, William Hochstetler; brother-in-law, Tobias Miller.
Sarah worked at the ARC in LaGrange for 18 years and was a member of the Old Order Amish Church.

After a shooting Thursday morning on the west side of Indianapolis, Worthington woman, Wilma Hochstetler, 40, is dead. She was identified by the Marion County coroner's office Thursday morning. Her husband, Jonathan Hochstetler was taken to an area hospital in critical condition with a gunshot wound to the neck.
Jonathan Hochstetler was at a work site when he had a tire on his trailer blow around 7 p.m. Wednesday. He sent two workers from the roofing and gutter company he owns to Worthington with the truck, and was later met by his wife, Wilma, in Indianapolis with the truck, a spare tire and their 6-year-old son.
After fixing the tire, the couple was about to leave but realized the lights of the trailer weren't working. While fixing the lights, the couple was approached by two men.
The men pulled out guns and took the couple's money and a cellphone from Wilma.
In an interview with the IndyStar, Sam Hochstetler, Jonathan's father, said, "Jonathan told us that (the robbers) turned around and started to walk away. All of a sudden, they just turned and shot. His wife was instantly killed. Jonathan was hit through the neck."
The men did not see the couple's son in the car, and Jonathan was able to get up and get a phone to call the police.
The couple was found by the Indianapolis Metropolitan Police Department around 1:30 a.m. Thursday near the 3000 block of North High School Road.
IMPD said the shooting remains under investigation, and police have not released any additional information about possible suspects.

Wilma E. (Slabaugh) Hochstetler, 40, of Bloomfield, Indiana, died September 17, 2020 in Indianapolis, Indiana. Wilma was born in Salem, Indiana on May 3, 1980 to Edward J. Slabaugh and Mary (Bontrager) Slabaugh. Wilma had a tremendous love for the Lord and enjoyed teaching her children the bible and of his works. She enjoyed music, spending time with her family and helping other people.
Wilma is survived by her husband of 17 years, Jonathan Hochstetler, daughters; Melissa Faith(16), Abigail Grace(14), Kendra Janise(9), and son Braden Cole(6), siblings; Edna Slabaugh, Joseph and Eunice Slabaugh, Ervin and Martha Slabaugh, Sarah and Ben Swarey, Esther and Steve Garber, Ida and James Lehman, Erma and Joel Yoder, Bertha and Mark Garber, Stephen and Velma Slabaugh, David Slabaugh, Paul and Anna Slabaugh, Tim and Becki Slabaugh, Miriam and Robert Graber.
Wilma was preceded in death by her father; Edward J. Slabaugh, mother; Mary A. Slabaugh and brother Jerry A. Slabaugh.
Funeral services will be 9:30 AM, Saturday, September 26, 2020 at the Elnora Bible Institute, 101 South East State Road 58, Elnora, Indiana. Pastor Marlon Wagler will officiate. Burial will follow in Worthington Christian Fellowship Cemetery.
Visitation will be 2:00 PM until 5:00 PM (Dinner at 5:00 PM) and 6:00 PM until 9:00 PM, Friday, September 25, 2020 at the Elnora Bible Institute.

Hofer, Melvin L., 96, of Freeman, Hutchinson Co., SD died March 4, 2020 at the same place.
He was born January 22, 1924 at Freeman, SD to Jacob L., Jr. and Anna (Hofer) Hofer. Jacob was born December 24, 1897 and died February 1, 1981. Anna was born June 27, 1899 and died July 10, 1979.
On March 23, 1947 at Bridgewater, McCook Co., SD he was married to Emma E. Hofer, who was born September 22, 1926 and survives.
Surviving are children, Dallas (Cindy); and Lyndon (Barbie); four grandchildren, 12 great-grandchildren, and two brothers, Vernon (Norma) and Merlin (Sylvia).
A son, Harris; two sisters, Evelyn (Arnold) Hofer and Marjorie (Sam A.) Hofer; and a brother, Kenneth (Glennis) preceded him in death.
Memorial services were held March 10, 2020 at Hutterthal Mennonite Church, Freeman, SD with burial in the adjoining cemetery.
Hollinger, Lois Elaine Shirk
November 2, 1929 - Februarey 9, 2020
Lois Elaine Shirk Hollinger, age 90, of Landis Homes, formerly of Lititz, went home to be with her Lord on February 9, 2020.
Born in Paradise Twp., she was the daughter of the late Paul E. and Bertha Mae Denlinger Shirk. For 65 years she was the loving wife of the late J. Clair Hollinger.
She was an active pastor's wife serving alongside her husband in several congregations including Vine Street Mennonite and Charlotte St. Mennonite Churches in Lancaster, Ridgeway Mennonite Church, Harrisonburg, VA, and Lititz Mennonite Church. Lois and Clair also served as missionaries in Trinidad.
Lois graduated from Lancaster Mennonite High School. Throughout life she enjoyed sharing hospitality, visitation, and occasionally worked in baking and cooking jobs. At Landis Homes she was an avid shuffleboard player.
She will be lovingly missed by: 3 sons, Jeryl married to Mary Hurst Hollinger, Kalispell, MT, John married to Grace Garber Hollinger, Quarryville, Joseph married to Cheryl Sell Hollinger, Lancaster; 9 grandchildren; 15 great-grandchildren. Lois was preceded in death by 2 brothers and 2 sisters: Norman P. Shirk, Kenneth L. Shirk, Mary Jane Fredrick, and Betty Jean Byler. She is survived by 4 sisters-in law: Dorothy Shirk, Mary Ann Broomell, Kathryn (Kay) Hollinger, and Ruth Hollinger.
A memorial service will be held on Saturday, February 15 at 3:00 PM at the Landis Homes West Bethany Chapel, 1001 E. Oregon Rd., Lititz. The family will visit with friends from 1:00 PM prior to the service. Private interment will be in Mellinger Mennonite Cemetery.
